Kara McArthur’s background is in Sociology and Biomedical Ethics, and she is an American Medical Writers Association-certified medical writer and editor. A graduate of Rice University, her research interests focus on communication strategies that integrate information and support for patients with chronic disease, particularly in under-resourced communities.
Clifford C. Dacso, M.D., Scientific Advisor
For over 35 years, Clifford Dacso has worked to improve healthcare by helping patients and clinicians acquire, structure, and use information more effectively. The Center’s multidisciplinary approach integrates social sciences, technology, and community-basedcare, both in the United States and internationally.
Dr. Dacso’s research focuses on new technologies that integrate information and support for patients with chronic disease, particularly in under-resourced communities. Current work includes research on omics, social determinants of health, and remote patient monitoring systems for congestive heart failure, asthma, exercise, and diabetes, for which he holds several patents. Dr. Dacso’s partnerships in developing countries include research on Buruli ulcer, Tuberculosis treatment and control, and breast cancer detection and prevention. He was founding Co-Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Journal of Translational Engineering in Health and Medicine.
Dr. Dacso is Philip J. Carroll, Jr. Professor of Translational Molecular & Cell Biology, Baylor College of Medicine; Hugh Roy and Lillie Cranz Cullen University Professor, University of Houston; and Adjunct Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Rice University. He holds degrees from the University of Pennsylvania (BA, MA 1972), Baylor College of Medicine (MD 1975), University of Texas (MPH, 1980) and Pepperdine University (MBA 1990). He was a 1999 Eisenhower Fellow.
